Hiroshima, Japan, Aug 9, 2015 / 07:08 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Seventy years ago, the only wartime use of nuclear weapons took place in the Aug. 6 attack on Hiroshima and the Aug. 9 attack on Nagasaki by the United States.

The Hiroshima attack killed around 80,000 people instantly and may have caused about 130,000 deaths, mostly civilians. The attack on the port city of Nagasaki killed about 40,000 instantly and destroyed a third of the city.

Four Jesuits were nearby the hypocenter of the attack on Hiroshima, but they survived the catastrophe, and the radiation that killed thousands in the months following had no effect on them.

The Jesuits priests Hugo Lassalle, Hubert Schiffer, Wilhelm Kleinsorge, and Hubert Cieslik were at the rectory of the church of Our Lady of the Assumption, one of the few buildings that resisted the bomb blast.

Father Cieslik wrote in his diary that they only sustained minor injuries from the broken windows – but nothing resulting from the atomic energy that was unleashed.

The doctors who took care of them afterwards warned them that the radiation they received would produce serious lesions, as well as illness and premature death.

The diagnosis never materialized. No disorders ever developed, and in 1976 Father Schiffer attended the Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia and told his story. He confirmed that the other Jesuits were still alive and without any ailments. They were examined by dozens of doctors some 200 times over the course of the following years, without any trace of the radiation being found in their bodies.

The four religious never doubted that they had been blessed with protection by God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. “We were living the message of Fatima and we prayed the Rosary every day,” they explained.

Bishop Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi of Niigata said Aug. 6 that Japan can contribute to peace “Not with new weapons, but with the noble activities that have a long history in the growth of the world, and in a particular way in developing countries.”

Bishop Kikuchi added that “this contribution to development, which brings about full respect for human dignity and its fulfillment, would be very appreciated and respected by the international community.”

Beware of selfish ambition which is the hallmark of a poor leader. Do not believe that title rectifies error. SELF-LOVE

HOLY LOVE
Is motivated towards self-advantage in thought, word, and deed. Is motivated in every thought, word, and action by love of God, and neighbor as self.
Sees only others’ faults, not his own. Considers himself on the right path—perhaps even humble and virtuous. Sees himself full of imperfections. Is always seeking to be perfected through love. Considers everyone more humble and holy than himself.
Holds a checklist in his heart of every wrong perpetrated against him. Imitates Divine Mercy as best he can. Is compassionate and forgiving.
Is quick to anger and stands vigil over his own rights making certain they are not transgressed. Is patient. Takes note of others’ needs and concerns.
Hangs on to his own opinions refusing to surrender to another viewpoint. Offers his own opinions but listens to others and lends them equal merit with his own.
Takes pride in his own achievements. May even take pride in his spiritual progress. Realizes all things proceed from God; that without God he is capable of no good thing. All good comes from grace.
Sees himself and the world as the be-all/end-all. His only pleasure is thus achieved through the world. Takes joy in storing up heavenly treasure, in growing closer to God and deeper in holiness. Knows the difference between earthly pleasures and spiritual joy.
Uses the goods of the world to satisfy self. Uses the goods of the world to satisfy quest for holiness.
Objects to every cross. Sees trials as a curse. Resents others’ good fortune. Surrenders to the cross through love as Jesus did. Sees crosses as a grace to be used to convert others.
Prays only for himself and his own needs. Prays for all in need.
Cannot accept God’s Will. Becomes bitter over trials. Accepts God’s Will with a loving heart even when difficult.

“A strong leader is resolved and confirmed in the Truth. The Truth supports his followers and allows them to grow according to God’s Plan. A leader who tries to control does not lead but becomes a dictator. Such a one does not support the Truth as the Truth is not in his heart. This is how evil agendas are conceived and hidden from the people. The one who leads towards the welfare of the people is open to the Divine Will. The one who chooses to control, leads according to his own agenda.”

“In the world, you have various forms of leadership – some based upon the Truth, some on secrecy and still others based upon terrorism. The heart of the world, that is all people and all nations, needs to take a close look at just how and where it is being led. If you are following someone bent on personal gain – be it power, riches or authority – you need to disengage yourself from living under such a leader. A leader is only as strong as his influence over others. Do not lend strength to evil agendas by uniting with them.”

This is how it should be with the government of this country and hopefully the heart of the world. Little by little the brokenness caused by errant leadership must be corrected. Normalcy, which considers the welfare of the people, must return.”
